There is evidence that self-propelled vehicles had been attempted unsuccessfully before Leonardo's time.

What is certain of Leonardo is that he would have improved upon existing designs in Italy or re-designed the automobile totally.

* Explore a vehicle design which possibly can be offered to a patron.

INNOVATIONS INTRODUCED:

Apart from being the first ever-working automobile, this Da Vinci invention is also recognised by some academics as the first ever-mechanical computer! This is due to the automobiles’ workings, which allows the direction of its’ launch to be programmed!

Leonardo recognized the potential of a spring (which had used in ancient times) to be able to release its energy from when it is coiled and released in order to move an item. The springs in his design are neatly coiled within barrels reminiscent of pistons.

NEXT DATE OF INVENTION:

1886 (408 years later):

Karl Benz and Daimler Gottlieb were German partners who created a self-propelled carriage with three wheels and which reached a horsepower of 0.75.

INFORMATION:

To start the car, it needs to be pushed backwards to turn the gears and coils the springs. Once let go, the vehicle is set in motion and self-propelled in an automated direction.

The car's preset direction is determined by the configuration of its springs and gears. There is no steering wheel to alter its course.

There is also no suspension for the wheels. All the gears and springs are used to propel and steer the machine.

MORE INFORMATION:

Springs will be used in the future to power watches and clock.

1905: an Italian academic called Girolamo Calvi discovered Leonardo’s car drawing notes and drawing.
